While the Colorado Avalanche greatly improved over a dismal season last year, shattering expectations left and right and arguably putting up more of a fight than the Detroit Red Wings against the San Jose Sharks in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Avalanche were bogged down throughout the regular and post-season by their defensive situation.

Sharks Handed Game on a Silver Platter
The Colorado Avalanche, also known as the underdogs, have been giving the San Jose Sharks a run for their money. The Avs have had to transition their game to nearly 100% defense to shut down the Sharks top two lines and they’ve been doing a good job of it. Unfortunately tonight in the Shark Tank, they were never once called for too many men on the ice. The Sharks had 9 total on ice at all times, not including Evgeni Nabokov, and four of them were wearing black and white stripes.

“Now the fun begins.” Those are the words that came out of the mouth of Colorado Avalanche winger Milan Hejduk when asked about the team’s first round match up against the San Jose Sharks. However, the Avalanche still have a chance to move up in the standings, so every game still has meaning.
Avs Top Kings in SO

The Avalanche went up against the LA Kings tonight at the Pepsi Center for the third time this season. John Michael Liles would be a healthy scratch again and Ruslan Salei would still be in the lineup. Even though Salei’s penalty allowed the Kings to convert in OT to win Monday night, coach Joe Sacco has liked the veteran’s play as of lately. If you ask me, he should have been benched for losing his cool in such a need-to-win situation. The Avs were also playing sans Darcy Tucker for his hit on Greene Monday night.
Liles Scratched, Salei In *Updated*
Much to the amazement of Adrian Dater, and those of you who blame Ruslan Salei for the loss in OT Monday night, Colorado Avalanche head Coach Joe Sacco has said that John-Michael Liles will be a healthy scratch in favor of Salei for tonight’s rematch against the Los Angeles Kings.
