The Chopping Block Part 1: Defenders

NO

I started with defenseman because there’s less of them, but here’s my list. Remember, this is in no way who is going to be traded or who I’d like to be traded. It’s just a list of players who would be logical choices for trade. So let’s go with Part 1 – Defenders:

The Chopping Block: Who Can We Afford to Let Go?

Paul Stastny

Throughout the Avalanche 2009-2010 season, we’ve seen a lot of highlights. Having been predicted to finish last in the Western Conference and in the basement of the overall NHL standings, the Avs have surprised everyone this season. They currently sit 2nd in the Northwest Division, 6th in the Western Conference, and 8th in the NHL. No one, not even die hard Avalanche fans expected these kind of results, especially during a rebuilding year.

Avs Nail Thrashers in OT

With the Thrashers losing top scorer Ilya Kovalchuk to the Devils this week, no one thought they’d show up to play… and boy, were we wrong. The first period started out with a garbage goal for the Thrashers, to which the Avs answered back almost immediately with a goal by Clark. Stastny set him up for the perfect shot; a skill he’s perfected to a T. A Thrasher penalty and an Avs power play, which produced nothing but a bunch of…well, nothing. Passing the puck around and not capitalizing on opportunities pretty much sums it up. Game tied 1-1 at the end of the first.

Avs vs. Jackets Game Notes

Matt Hendricks and Craig Anderson

The Colorado Avalanche face off at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight in the fourth meeting between the two teams this season. There are a few things going on with the team that are interesting to take note of.

Liles On The Block?

John-Michael Liles

Seems like things are heating up regarding the plethora of defensemen the Colorado Avalanche have suddenly found themselves with. Seven were dressed the other night against Dallas, with John-Michael Liles moving up to fill in offensively for the absence of an injured Ryan Stoa. This scenario becomes even more muddied when the oft forgotten Ruslan Salei finally returns (someday – he is skating ok!). But what are the Avs to do?

Four goals were scored in tonight’s game against the Dallas Stars. When the first puck was dropped, the Avalanche were firing on all cylinders and played an all-around great game. They applied offensive pressure throughout, even in the 3rd period- a place where the Avs have been lacking a bit all season, playing mostly on their heels. This last series of games for the Burgundy Boys has started to turn that around.
