A lot of talk has sprung up today about the Colorado Avalanche’s in game entertainment experience. So much so, in fact, that Denver Post beat writer Adrian Dater is composing a page two story about his ideas. That got us to thinking, what is it that you want when you go to a game at the Pepsi Center?
Anybody who has seen a game lately should know that it is basically the same old antics everynight. Jake Schroeder sings the National Anthem, Rock’n Roll Part 2 by pedophile Gary Glitter plays when the Burgundy Boys score a goal, the dumb “Price is Right” game occurs during a break in the action, the steroptypical goal horn roars, and every now and then a youth hockey team plays intermission while most people are out getting food.
We’re thinking its time to mix it up a bit. You don’t have to replace everything, but a change of pace is always a good thing. I asked Avs radio talent Marc Moser what he thinks is the most entertaining arena to which he replied “my road faves r Minny, LA, SJ, CLB, MSG, CHIC”. There is something to these places that make them stand out from the pack. Don’t you think the Can should be a place that people remember from an experience aside from the game itself?
It was mentioned that Detroit had Flogging Molly perform the National Anthem at one time. Denver has the Flobots, 3OH!3, and the Fray locally, not to mention the talent doesn’t actually have to be from here. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy Schroeder bellowing out a resounding anthem. But I’ve heard it nearly every game since I can remember.
We finally have a nice entrance, with the strange light-door set up, reminiscent of the time we had the giant mountain to skate through… before it ended up as a landmark in the far dark realms of the back of the parking lot. The lights are nice, but remember the Avalanche Siren going off? Well do you remember when the staff would set off fireworks inside as Avalanche bombs and the siren would ignite the arena into a frenzy before the boys would skate out to deafening applause?
How about when clips of Tommy Boy and other movies would appear after insane moves and awesome goals? Similar to the quiet remarks of “outstanding” and the like that play today. I love those things, they were odd and different. I read once that the San Jose Sharks mascot (I think), would ride down for the ceiling on a zip-line. I’ve seen Crush arena football players repel in during their announcements.
The Pepsi Center needs to create spectacle. Make fans want to fill their seats. Give us something we can’t get at home watching television.
I’m all for a new song, our old horn, funny exciting events during intermission like musical chairs. In high school we once played full contact football in hockey pads with our skates on. We want to be entertained.
It is a sad day when the Mammoth, an indoor lacrosse team, can sell out and put on a better show than our beloved Avalanche.
A few of us are considering coming together for a brief round-table on in-game entertainment issues and we’d like to hear what you have to say about it. Fill in your thoughts in the comments below and be heard. Let us represent what you want to say.
What do you like about what the Avalanche do each night? What don’t you like? What do you want to see? Ideas on a new goal song? Tell us!
