Avs Nail Thrashers in OT

With the Atlanta Thrashers losing top scorer Ilya Kovalchuk to the New Jersey Devils this week, no one thought they’d show up to play… and boy, were we wrong. The first period started out with a garbage goal for the Thrashers, to which the Avs answered back almost immediately with a goal by Brett Clark. Paul Stastny set him up for the perfect shot; a skill he’s perfected to a T.  A Thrasher penalty and an Avs power play, which produced nothing but a bunch of…well, nothing. Passing the puck around and not capitalizing on opportunities pretty much sums it up. Game tied 1-1 at the end of the first.

Second period started out lazy, and continued that way. Another Thrasher’s goal put them up 2-1, and a BS unsportsmanlike conduct call on Craig Anderson really killed the momentum. Ryan O’Reilly had a shot on breakaway that looked promising, but was quickly denied by Johan Hedberg. Second period came to an end with what looked to be a Thrasher’s goal, but was nixed due to the fact it didn’t completely cross the line. The Avs really got lucky there, and the crowd roared as the ref announced “no goal.” To be honest, the Avs looked like their heads weren’t in the game at all for the entire second period and the first bit of the third. Thrashers were up 2-1 at the end of the second.

Third period started with another one for the Thrashers, to make it a 2-point game. Many fans started to head out, as all hope was seemingly lost. What they missed was what turned into an amazing comeback. The Avs gained some momentum when Chris Stewart scored off of his own rebound, putting one more up on the board and narrowing Atlanta’s lead to one. Not moments after, the Avs tie it up with a dirty goal from Chris Durno with Cody McLeod on the assist.  A delay of game penalty on the Thrasher’s gave the Avs the upper hand with 5 minutes left in the third. Defense really tightened up to prevent the chance of another Atlanta goal and ended the third strong, tied 3-3.

Overtime was what made this game simply remarkable. Stastny won the faceoff and shot it straight to Kyle Cumiskey , who wasted no time. He took off like a rocket past everyone, faked out Hedberg and slapped it in, winning it for the Avs with only 0:09 seconds off the clock in OT, the fastest overtime win in franchise history. With this win, the Avs take the number one spot in the Northwestern Division.
