Avs Drop Third vs. Rangers

I suppose you can say that some teams go on a bit of a losing streak after winning 6 or so in a row.  That’s what’s going on with the Avs currently.  The Rangers were in town, as well as their fans (who were quite annoying at the Pepsi Center), coming off a loss from Phoenix the previous night.  There were a lot of things that went wrong tonight in front of the fans.

First of all, both the Rangers and the Avalanche took 4 penalties apiece in the 1st period alone and it only got worse from there.  Strangely enough, neither team could convert a power play into a point.  The best moment of the first was the fight between Cody McLeod and Aaron Voros.  McLeod started talking crap to Voros before the puck was dropped and shortly after the drop, the pair dropped gloves and Cody got the best punches in.

Then Martin Gaborik scored a wrist shot at 13:53.  Turns out that Gaborik is the only guy on the Rangers who can score against Anderson.  Every other member of the Red, White and Blue just couldn’t figure Andy out.  But Gaborik scored in the 2nd and 3rd periods as well.  That’s right, the guy got a hat trick on OUR home ice. It sucked.  There shouldn’t have been that many hats on the ice tonight.

Altogether, each team took 7 penalties.  For some reason, as an Avs fan in the audience, it seemed more lopsided than that.  Every goal tonight was even strength.  The Avs scored 12:39 into the 3rd, but it was already over.  Cody McLeod scrambled in front of the net and ended up backhanding one past Johnson.

Overall: bad game.  The Avs tried their hardest, but the Rangers capitalized on every single little mistake the Burgundy Boys made.  The Avs just seemed a little off tonight.  Everywhere they passed the puck, the Rangers were there to intercept.  Every time they shot on goal, except once, the Rangers were there to block it or get in the way.

I’m not sure what else I can say.  It was just bad and it wasn’t all the Avs’ fault.  The Rangers were just the better team tonight, even though they’re 25-24-7 to the Avs 30-18-6.

And that’s about all I’ve got tonight.
